SA04SEQ-07: Pest management

<< BACK TO R&D TRIALS

Research Site / Demonstration Number: SA04SEQ-07

Grower Collaborator: Seven Peaks

Location 7: Williams Road, Elimbah

Initiation Date: December 2018

OUTLINE: To develop and evaluate an improved pre-plant and post plant pesticide program to improve fruit quality and yield in hybrid pineapple in moderate to heavy low pH soils.

OBJECTIVES:

  • To investigate and improve the preventative pest management programs to pineapple fields with a focus on Phytophthora Root Rot and Nematode.
  • To investigate and improve pre-plant pest management programs with focus on the improving soil biology and non traditional practices.
  • To undertake a cost analysis of the different pest management program vs standard practices.
  • To increase yield and fruit quality in plant and ratoon crops.

METHODOLOGY:

The research trial has been undertaken in co-operation with Seven Peaks – South East Queensland.  The location of the trial site is Williams Road, Wamuran.  The trial site has followed a previous crop of 73/50 hybrid which was taken to plant crop only.  The previous crop harvested in Spring 2018 with major issues of phytophthora root rot, nematode and black beetle / white grub.

The soil was prepared to standard industry conditions with good soil tilth, no crop residue and good soil moisture with a soil pH of 4.6.  Weather leading up to application had good rainfall with temperatures ranging from 20 – 30 degrees Celsius.

Trial location prior to planting

LAND PREPARATION:

Ensure the soil is:

  • Tilth is fine
  • Free of trash / crop residue
  • Deep tillage has been undertaken using deep rippers twice – angled then straight.
  • Land has been levelled

PROGRESS REPORT:

Current Progress: Site has been selected, land prepared, pre-plant applied and hilled.  Pre-plant treatments have been applied. To be planted in next month.

Issues Encountered: Site changed on growers farm due to change of planting plan.

Other Notes: This site has been combined with SA03SEQ-01 in a complete pest and nutrition program.
